[Wadabo_updates] making some noise to stop climate change
I pass this along as part political, part musical news. If the idea of
politics on this list bothers you, please delete this message now. I
promise not to do this very often.
If you'd like to join me in making some noise to help sound the alarm
on climate change on Monday, September 21st, please get in touch with
me directly at erichludwig at gmail dot com. We can sort something out
- take some drums, bells, voices out on the street - maybe near the
dance complex, or perhaps downtown by the state house.
See the details on this global effort below, with the original email
sent to me by Jamie Catto, one of the creative forces behind the 1
Giant Leap and What About Me projects.
Thanks!

Subject: making some noise
Hey!
it's Jamie from 1 Giant Leap - it's been a while, how are you? I need
some help with a crazy project!
...I've recently hooked up with the incredibly efficient and
passionate folks at AVAAZ who've had unprecedented success calling
their 3.5 million members to action on vital environmental and human
rights issues. They've just explained to me that the Global Summit on
Climate Change this December in Copenhagen is our last chance to
persuade Governments to agree to any significant policies which will
do anything to help the impending Climate Change catastrophe. This is
the 'Last Call For Climate Change'.
To show leaders that citizens care, they are organizing a 'Global Wake
Up Call for Climate' on September 21st (2 weeks from now) and have
asked me to help get more energy behind the action.
What we've come up with is a massive 'SOUND THE ALARM FOR CLIMATE:
MAKE SOME NOISE' action. We want to incite and invite the world's
street bands, like the street bands or drummers of Mali, to take to
the streets on 21st Sept and play as loud as they can to make their
alarm call to leaders unmissable. All over the world people will play
music and take to the streets on the same day and at the same symbolic
time of 18.12, (which is the date that the climate treaty will be
signed). And to make extra sure that their message is heard, we will
provide fans with the telephone numbers of Heads of State around the
world so that they can dial the number, blast their favourite track
and leave a message: "This is your climate Wake Up call".
Would you be interested in supporting this? It would basically mean
helping me and Bibi reach the bands (or even 1 band) and ask them to
play on that day, take a few pics, and register now on the site that
they'll do it. The site we're trying to lead everyone to is
http://www.avaaz.org/en/sept21_make_some_noise/
Avaaz and all the big agencies - Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund,
Friends of the Earth, and Oxfam are joining forces on this and they
say that: It's now or never to save our planet - it is THE issue and
this is THE time.
I am very excited to use our music to sound the alarm for climate and
I hope that you can help me
what do you think?
much love
Jamie

Seydou's Class Starting Tomorrow - Michelle Bach-Coulibaly Guest Teaching
I trust that you've had a wonderful summer, and that as things ramp up
this fall you'll all continue to find time for your spirit and body in
the dance.
I'm excited to announce that we're back in action for West African
dance! The Dance Complex is newly renovated and cleaned up and I can't
wait to see it. All classes should be starting up as regularly scheduled
starting tonight. And although Seydou is still in Mali, we have again
the great honor of great guest teachers.
Starting tomorrow (Wednesday, September 9th), Michelle Bach-Couliably
will again be teaching Seydou's class. Expect a high energy,
comprehensive warm-up starting PROMPTLY at 7:30 pm, followed by a high
energy, awesome creative dance class accompanied by our normal crew of
amazing drummers. Steps will be broken down, technique taught, and the
dance discussed in cultural context. Expect to have tons of fun!
Michelle is a Professor in the Theatre, Speech and Dance Department at
Brown University
(http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Theatre_Speech_Dance/people/bach-coulibaly.html).
She has been teaching there for many years, starting many of us students
in this journey of dance, as well as bringing many of the Malian artists
now in our community to the USA (including her husband Seydou). She is
also the director of the New Works/World Traditions theater company, and
was recently invited by the Malian Ministry of Culture to bring this
company to perform in Mali.
As a reminder, all dance and drum classes are listed here:
http://wadabo.com/_wsn/classes.html
If you'd like to be able to edit this calendar, please get in touch with
erich ludwig (erichludwig [at] gmail.com). If you know of classes that
have shifted, also please let erich know so the calendar can be accurate
for the fall/winter.
Also, all dance/drum classes are open to drop-ins (except as noted), and
are open to all levels of participants (except as noted).
See you on the dance floor.
peace.
