Africa gave birth to the blues, which begat jazz, which spawned funk,
which will always be the music of James Brown. To celebrate his
musical and cultural legacy, Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley –
cornerstones of Brown's legendary band on saxophone and trombone,
respectively – present the Boston debut of Still Black, Still Proud:
An African Tribute to James Brown. Ellis and Wesley have put together
a pan-continental supergroup which features special guests Vieux Farka
Touré, the rising Malian star and son of the legendary Ali Farka
Toure, and the spiritual and enigmatic Senegalese vocalist Cheikh Lô,
joining a band which includes vocalists Fred Ross and Martha High;
alto saxophonist Charles McNail; guitarist Reggie Ward; keyboardist
Peter Madsen; bassist Eric Herman and drummer John Mader, for what
promises to be an unforgettable tribute to a seminal singer and
performer.

Dear Friends and Family,

My apologies for the mass email!

I'm helping to produce a few fundraisers to save the life of my dear
friend Modou Konat - a talented Senegalese musician and wonderful
human being who I've been working with for 10 years.

Modou suffers from a terrible (yet 100 % treatable!) heart condition
and we're producing a few events to raise the money needed for the
operation.

Even if you can't come to the event, you can help by forwarding the
email below onto others who might also be interested in attending - or
- buying the Save Modou Gift Pack!

Thanks in advance and we hope to see you in Boston, NYC or New
Hampshire at one of our events!!

Read below for details!!!

Have you been wondering lately how YOU can make a difference?

We know how you can help!!

You can pitch in to save the life of our dear friend Modou - a
talented urban poet from Senegal West Africa - and get a fantastic
hair cut, a hip and flattering t-shirt, a CD and attend a lovely wine
and cheese event! Sound good? Keep reading!!

One dear friend Modou Konat (one of the lead characters in the African
Underground: Democracy in Dakar film) is in critical condition.

He suffers from common but potentially fatal heart conditions called
Rheumatic Heart Disease, Mitral Regurgitation and Pulmonary
Hypertension. It's a BAD combination any way you look at it, but is
even worse if you're an artist with no money living in West Africa.

Watch a short documentary we made about Modou here!

It is a simple operation, but because of the lack of practicing
doctors in Senegal and the overwhelming cost of surgery, he has not
been able to undergo the operation and his health is failing.

But there's good news!!!

Thanks to an amazing group of physicians called Surgeons Of Hope, our
dear friend Modou, who never complains about his lack of oxygen,
inability to move around or swiftly failing voice, can live out the
rest of his days and continue making beautiful music and taking care
of his family, with our help.

In the US this operation costs 60,000 USD
In France this operation costs 40,000 USD

With Surgeone of Hope - we can save Modou's life for only 5,400 USD!!

The operation is routine, safe and highly effective with a 99 % rate of success.

Watch this short video of a prominent American doctor talk about
Modou's condition

We have already raised $1,500 dollars. And we are throwing other
fundraisers and taking donations for the rest of what we need to earn.

Only $4000 dollars? When was the last time saving someone's life cost
that little??

And... you won't leave our fabulous fundraisers empty handed. At our
wine and cheese/fundraising/haircutting bonanza, we will offer you the
opportunity to help AND get something back :)
