[Wadabo_updates] Camp Fareta w/ Youssouf Koumbassa 2009

Greetings drummers and dancers --

We have some good news -- Camp Fareta, Youssouf Koumbassa's weeklong West African drum and dance camp in California, is ON!  We lost our grant this year so we weren't sure if we could make it happen, but we've found some ways to cut costs, plus airfares right now are way low -- so for those outside of California, it's a great time to book a flight and join us!

Here's the deal:  the dates are July 12-19.  Confirmed dance teachers are Youssouf Koumbassa (teaching every day), Mariama Camara, Moustapha Bangoura, Abdoulaye Sylla, and Djeneba Sako.  Confirmed drummers are M'Bemba Bangoura, Fode Bangoura, Mangue Sylla, and Amara Mansare.  More will be added as time goes on and as we get a sense of our likely attendance.

Check http://www.dancingvillage.com/camp_fareta.php for details on past camps.  We hope to get the website updated soon, with teacher names and registration info.  And here's a link to the front-page article in the local paper, the Fresno Bee, last year:  http://www.fresnobee.com/907/story/727866.html

As usual, we'll have Kids Camp for the young ones, work-exchange, some beginner-level classes, fun evening events, and a gourmet international menu that campers continue to rave about.  The camp has a lake for swimming and boating and it's near Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, so it's a beautiful vacation for nature-lovers too!

So give thanks, spread the word, and get ready for another great year of Camp Fareta!

Peace and best wishes to all,

Christina and the rest of the Camp Fareta crew

During this month of February we commonly celebrate 'Black History', but
what we are really doing is paying homage and respect to the paths blazed,
rights demanded, innovations forged and progress gained quite literally
through the blood, sweat and tears of Africans and their descendants who
were brought here to this 'New World' against their will. We as a people,
should always keep this on our minds and in our hearts... however tonight,
we carve out some time to intently pay respect and give thanks to them
through dance, set to Afrikan rhythms mixed with House, Soul, Salsa,
Gospel, Jazz, Funk & More.

the Boston Center for Adult Education and SpringStep (Medford) - Sign
up now!

I would like to offer you an opportunity to learn samba and
Afro-Brazilian dance with 8 week courses that will break the dances
down to their basics and then progress forward to dancing with
confidence and choreography. This will be especially helpful to folks
who feel lost in large classes or get stuck in the back of the room
feeling like they are missing out on dance moves. Please take
advantage and learn in a small class setting. Also, this is not a
drop in class. So, we can move forward together without tangling
beginners with advanced dancers and achieve a certain level of ability
at the end of the course. Please forward the info to any of your
friends that may be interested, especially if they live in Boston or
close to Medford. Of course we will continue our drop in class at the
Dance Complex and have fun every Saturday, 1:30-3:00pm (536 Mass Ave,

[Wadabo_updates] Travel to Senegal with Fatou Carol Sylla

A SPECIAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE to SENEGAL, WEST AFRICA
An arts-based, grassroots, cultural emersion study abroad /
professional development program with a three credit option through
Lesley University

July 5-20, 2009

West Africa is rich with humanistic culture that is transferred from
generation to generation through its art forms. This course will offer
students an arts-based emersion experience, in Senegal, exploring the
humanism and wisdom of West African cultures through the clearest
windows to these cultures, their art forms. This program will focus
on traditional dance, drumming and song.

This exciting two-week study abroad program will be based for one week
in the Casamance, a geographically isolated region in the southern
most part of Senegal, known as the "Garden of Senegal". This is a
rural area, in which traditional rituals and an animistic spiritual
cosmology are still very prevalent.

The beautiful and very historic Goree Island (a twenty minute ferry
ride to Dakar) will be home to students during part of the second week
of this cultural emersion experience. Goree Island is a village
hundreds of years old and home to the Slave House Museum, which stands
as a reminder of the exportation of West Africans as slaves from her
shores. Finally, students will spend several days in the northern
Theis Region of Senegal, indigenous to the Wolof people of Senegal.

While in Senegal students will have the opportunity to:

Study indigenous dance, drumming and song in their traditional
contexts as well as with National Artists. Dance and Drum classes
will be held almost everyday.

Prepare for and participate in a Bambara Genie Follie ritual

Attend lectures on "Spirituality and the Arts in West Africa", "Islam
in Senegal and How This Religion Interfaces with Senegalese Arts and
Culture" as well as "Transposing Traditional Dance and Music (not just
in form but with their innate transformative powers intact) From The
Village to the Stage".

Attend a National Ballet of Senegal rehearsal and/or performance.

Visit the Slave House, Ifa Museum, the Theis Museum of Tapestries, and
the University of Dakar.

Meet with a traditional practitioner, watch artisans at work, and
visit traditional open markets in Ziginchor, Casamance and on Goree
Island.

Participate in community service by providing a class/activity for a
group of Ussoforal School of the Arts students re: a subject of your
own expertise.

Fatou-Carol Sylla founded A Special Cultural Exchange in 1985 and has
organized and led West African arts based, grassroots study abroad
programs for more than two decades in Senegal, Guinea and Guinea
Bissau, including several years for Bradford College. She does this
in conjunction with Sadio Diatta Rosche, international artist, founder
and director of Ussoforal School of the Arts serving 300 children in
Senegal and Guinea Bissau and tour organizer in her native Casamance;
Fotigue Toure, music director of the National Theater Group of
Senegal; Cheikh Sene, Chancellor of Bambey University, Senegal and
many artists/family members

Final payment of $1550 due May 15, 2009

also spread the word to other artists. This will help make sure that the
organizations that work to get us more money from the state know what we
are up to, know how many of us there are, and have the tools they need
to lobby on our behalf.
Thank you,

Greetings,

Thank you for partially filling out Stand Up and Be Counted - an online survey for Massachusetts artists of all disciplines (music, film, visual, craft, performing, literary, etc.).

At the request of several artists run advocacy organizations and artists leaders, we have extended the Survey until the end of this week (Saturday, February 7th, 2009).

We sincerely hope that you will complete the questions/sections you wish to answer and will officially submit the survey at http://survey.artistsfoundation.org/

Your answers will help the AF and others better advocate for our community on legislation and policy. Please be aware that several of the NON REQUIRED questions ask for 2006 income data - so you may need to find/dust off your 2006 IRS tax returns.

Over 2,900 artists have filled out the survey to date!

PLEASE help us reach our goal of over 3,000 responses and help us spread the word to others artists of all disciplines in our state. They can complete the survey by Saturday, February 7, at: http://survey.artistsfoundation.org/

Sincerely,

Kathleen Bitetti, Project Leader
Artist & Executive Director of the Artists Foundation

David Galiel, Project Developer
Nonprofit Web Consultant & Musician
