[Wadabo_updates] continental driftings - drifting on . . .

hello all -
after a wonderful few months of having the Middle East make a home for
live (and DJ'ed) african music, they are changing the formatting for
Thursdays, starting May 10.

However, we have 2 more weeks to enjoy!
So come on out and support Sidi Mohamed JOH Camara
(http://johcamara.calabashmusic.com/) tonight! April 26th from 10 pm
until 1 am!
And next Thursday, May 3rd, come out for Balla Kouyate
(http://ballakouyate.com/) to hear his newest group, based on his
stellar balafon playing.

From May 10th forward, Atlas Soul (http://atlassoul.calabashmusic.com/)

the Corner, and Gian Carlo is moving over to the Corner on Fridays.

So go on and check them out.

And stay tuned for the latest in live african music!
peace.

[Wadabo_updates] dance performances in providence, RI

if you have not seen michelle bach-coulibaly's work (she is seydou's
wife), then you should for sure check out her shows this spring. she
combines african moves and stylings with her own creations and modern
technique to create an amazingly unique and layered show, that involves
all sorts of music, song, dance, text. as i said, amazing. details below.

>>>
hi friends!

if you are free and so inclined, please come see *new works/world
traditions dance company *premiere our latest work, a long
dance/movement piece (30-40 minutes) about family and identity that
features 12 fabulous dancers dancing/exploring space, 2 malian musicians
drumming, 1 professional fiddler fiddling, 1 vocally acrobatic dancer
singing opera, and many more surprises. the piece is exciting and
bizarre and visually interesting and (hopefully) poignant (at least from
the inside that's what i think it will be like, but come and you can
tell me if i was totally off).

*vital info:*

*1**)* shows are *t**hurs may 3, fri may 4, sat may 5 at 8PM and sun may
6 at 2PM in stuart theatre* on the brown campus (just a touch east of
the intersection of waterman and brown streets; enter on waterman).

*2) we are the very first piece in the show* (so you can leave after us
if you don't care for straight-up modern dance which is probably what
the rest of the show will be).

*3) student/brown staff/faculty tickets are $5*. you can buy them at the
door (i doubt we will sell out) or click on "tickets" at this link for
more info http://brown.edu/Facilities/Theatre/. if you can't get $5
tickets, let me know and i can probably get them for you.

and if you're in the mood to see performance right now in general, i
also recommend *DONE* (playing at the black rep), a play based on over
100 interviews with teenagers (playing through may 20, details at
blackrep.org), and the *drum of the wave of horikawa*, which is in its
final weekend at perishable theatre (www.perishable.org

<http://www.perishable.org>) right now. see more detailed comments from
a friend below.

Hello Friends of Perishable,
Nothing says GO SEE IT like an audience member--
read the following message!

***Over the last two nights, I had the pleasure of
sitting in on the press nights for THE DRUM OF THE
WAVES OF HORIKAWA - a historical tragedy comedy
thriller in 5 episodes- at Perishable Theatre.

DotWoH is kind of amazing! Nothing like this has been
seen in Providence in a while... if ever. It's brash,
it's insanely creative, it's amazing. GO SEE
IT!!!

This 18th-century kabuki play has been molded by the
Theatre of the Two-Headed Calf into a punk rock
masterpiece. I can say definitively that this is a
show that seasoned theater-goers and those who haven't
set foot into a theater in years will equally enjoy.
And why not, it's got everything: sex, drunkenness,
love, violence, honor, sacrifice, humor, sadness,
noise, quiet, light, dark, movement, stillness,
abstract, concrete, two drum sets, a keyboard, and
electric bass.

Again, GO SEE IT!!! It's only here for two weeks! This
is one of those productions that will explode when it
goes back to NYC and you get to see it HERE and NOW!

You won't be sorry.

[Wadabo_updates] Konono No 1 @ The Middle East!

Hi all -
WONDERFUL live show coming up in just 2 short weeks . . . Get your tix now!

Konono N°1 (from Congo)
Sunday May 6, 2007
The Middle East Upstairs
18+
$15adv/$20dos
Music at http://konono.calabashmusic.com/

Come on out and dance! They played Somerville Theater last year, but
there was no room to dance. Now, at the Middle East, there is no excuse.
See you there!

Konono N°1 is a musical group from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the
Congo. They combine three electric likembé (a traditional instrument
similar to the mbira) with voices, dancers, and percussion instruments
that are made out of items salvaged from a junkyard. The group's
amplification equipment is equally rudimentary, including a microphone
carved out of wood fitted with a magnet from an automobile alternator
and a gigantic horn-shaped amplifier. The group achieved international
renown beginning in 2005, with its DIY aesthetic appealing to many fans
of rock and electronic music.

The group's full name, as seen on the banner in its music video, is
L'orchestre folklorique T.P. Konono N°1 de Mingiedi"; "T.P." (short for
tout puissant, or "all powerful") is an homage to the band of the
legendary Congolese musician Franco, which was called T.P. OK Jazz. It
was formed by Mawangu Mingiedi, a likembé player and truck driver now in
his 70s. Mingiedi is a member of the Zombo (or Bazombo) ethnic group,
whose homeland is located near the border with Angola. He adapted for
his likembé ensemble Zombo ritual music that was originally played by an
ensemble of horns made from elephant tusks.

Dates for the group's formation vary: Crammed Discs, who released Konono
N°1's Congotronics album in 2005, places the group's formation around
1980. However, the group was in existence at least as early as 1978; in
November 1978, an ensemble called Orchestre Tout Puissant Likembe Konono
N°1 (All-Powerful Likembe Orchestra Konono N°1) recorded one track,
"Mungua-Muanga," for the compilation album Zaire: Musiques Urbaines a
Kinshasa. The group has exerted an influence on many other Congolese
popular musicians and groups.

The group has achieved some renown in North America and Europe, and has
toured both places. The Dutch rock band The Ex has covered one of their
songs.

The group recently finished collaborating with Björk on her new studio
album, Volta. They will also accompany her on her promotional tour for
the album.
