I am very excited to announce a new class in Cambridge Starting Monday November 8th

 

An on-going study of Contemporary African dance class with: 

Michelle Bach-Coulibaly (see bio below) and Moussa Troare from Mali West Africa.

Class description:

This class will engage each student in a rigorous and detailed physical decoding of Mande Dance and Performance traditions from Mali, West Africa. These  life-cycle, celebratory dances are from the Bambara, Somono, Khassonke, Minianka, Malinke, and Wasalou cultural groups that emphasize Mande concepts of youthfulness, brightness, luminosity, coolness, stability, flexibility, strength, balance and communal healing. Each dance will be taught with a focus upon its cultural context and place in defining a National Patrimony. 

Each class will begin with a thorough warm-up that emphasizes building strength, flexibility, and endurance to efficiently work in the style and vitality of West African Dance, Music and Performance.  The warm-up floor and standing barre is based in Yoga, Pilates, Somatic Studies, and corrective alignment practices.The dances taught are from the Mande region of Mali, with repertory from Contemporary Malian ballet companies including Danse Kelete, Ballet National, District du Bamako, and Troupe Komee Josee.

  

Michelle is the co-founder and director of the Yeredon Centre for Cultural Preservation and Social Engagement in Mali, West Africa. With Seydou Coulibaly, Michelle Bach-Coulibaly directs cultural exchange and service learning trips to Mali every year with three-five week sessions happening over Winter Break, during planting season in the Spring and two different sessions in the Summer.  The Yeredon Centre is in partnership with The Djoumanzana Orphanage and Community center, The Kafo Association, Madame Togo Orphanage, and numerous NGO's to work on literacy, environmental and public health projects.

Moussa Traore was born and raised in Mali, West Africa. He has been playing the djembe for the past thirty years, and in 1984, after completing a twelve-year apprenticeship, he was deemed a "master" by his teachers, Sega Cisse and Sidiki Bagayogo.  Moussa's teachers are still drumming as Malian elders and are highly respected for their life-long work. [Wadabo_updates] Fatou-Carol back teacheing tonight and Benefit for Ussoforal and Master Class with Sadio Diatta Rosche Friday Oct 29

Fatou-Carol is back and will begin teaching class again tonight.

 

Sadio Diatta Rosche is also back in town and the annual fundraiser for Sadio's School, Ussoforal , in Guinea Bissau, will be next Friday night, Oct 29.

 

Sadio will be teaching and also sharing information about her school and the children who still need sponsors.   Each year we raise money for new or maintenance construction as well as costumes, school supplies, food and shipping costs for donated clothes.

 

Please come and offer what you can.   All class proceeds will go to help Sadio continue her work with the children in Guinea Bissau and in the Casamance region of Senegal.

This trio brings roots folk azmari music from Ethiopia, sung by Selamnesh Zemene of Fendika, backed by the kebero drumming of Asrat Ayalew and the violin work of Kaethe Hostetter.

Debo Band kicks out classic Ethiopian grooves of swinging Addis, big horn orchestra style. Wild saxophones and violins over double drums, sousaphone bass, accordion, guitar, and trombone bring the funk jam and new sound on Ethiopian scales and rhythms. Vocalist Bruck Tesfaye of Boston is joined by visiting Ethiopian vocalist Selamnesh Zemene, while Asrat Ayalew doubles Debo's kit drummer with his goatskin kebero drums, backing dancers in a 15-person stage experience. 

Fendika Dancers: Melaku Belay and Zinash Tsegay – traditional, modern, explosive. Called "the sleeper sensation of the Chicago World Music festival," a star of Milwaukee's Global Union, and now returning from New York and East Coast engagements, this tour finale show will be send-off celebration of these Ethiopian guests' time in America in collaboration with Boston-based Debo Band and the dance community. Expect an audience on its feet with children up front and invited onto the dance stage. Not to be missed!

Buffet Eritrean-Ethiopian food from Meheret's Kitchen is available for $10 donation per person. Injera and wots of various spices and flavors!

DANCE CLASS ::: 5:00 - 6:00 pm

This Master Class, taught by Melaku Belay and Zinash Tsegay of Fendika, welcomes both trained dancers and anyone interested in traditional Ethiopian dance forms. Melaku is a master of a range of traditional Ethiopian dance forms, from eskista to Gurage and Tigrigna, and he has toured in Europe, North America, and Africa while maintaining an Addis Ababa hotspot of acoustic traditional Ethiopian folk music and dance, where Zinash is the lead female dancer. This demonstration and workshop will give you new skills to try out and insight into the dance stageshow that Melaku and Zinash will perform with Debo Band's concert! Get those shoulders loose ... Join the celebration of the 50th Independence Day for 17 African nations (including MALI) with a festival that features the music and dance of West Africa and the diaspora. Performers include Sidy Maiga, Issa Coulibaly, Moussa Traoré, Balla Kouyaté, Uhuru Afrika, Alima International, Kombo Performing Arts Company, Diery Diery, Michelle Cruz, New Works World Traditions, Jesus Anujar Y Los Rumbero and DJ Guyzo.

Instructor

 Fatou-Carol Sylla holds an M.S.P.H. in Health Education, M.A. in Dance from Lesley University and Massachusetts Teaching Certification K-12 in both Dance and Health.  She has been a dance teacher, performer and choreographer for the past 35 years. She currently teaches at the Dance Complex and VSA arts of Massachusetts, leads a summer studies abroad program, Dance, Music and Culture in Senegal, West Africa, that is accredited through Lesley University, and leads Moving Into Authenticity, movement and healing workshops, in the Boston area. She is also a Baby Boomer.

[Wadabo_updates] Seydou Coulibaly Class Update - Wed Sept 8!

Hello all - 

Hope the last 2 weeks were refreshing and lovely and that you are ready to dance!!

The Dance Complex is open again, and classes are getting going! 

Wednesday, September 8, 2010 @ 7:30 pm, Michelle Bach-Coulibaly will be teaching for Seydou. Michelle just got back from the yearly dance exploration trip she and Seydou lead to Mali, and as always will create a great dance class for us all. 

Class is $13, runs from 7:30 - 9 pm, and includes amazing live drumming.

Michelle Bach-Coulibaly is a performance artist and educator who, since becoming a professor at Brown University in 1987, has created over 40 original pieces of contemporary movement theatre for the concert stage that investigate socio-political canvases, cross-cultural narratives, and embodied texts. At Brown University she directs New Works/World Traditions, a research-to-performance troupe of actors, musicians, dancers and imagists who develop new theatre for national and international festivals, educational venues, and for the concert stage. 

As a long time RISCA supported artist for school programming and education, Bach-Coulibaly has conceived, written and performed over thirty different educational programs that regularly tour nationally and internationally that utilize the power of performance to service public health, sustainable entrepreneurship and egalitarian exchange. Since 1990, her work in Mali has been focused upon building Yeredon, a research center for cultural preservation, international collaboration and social activism. Yeredon is the home for the Bloodline Project, a unique international collaboration and edutainment program to combat the devastating effects of malaria and other debilitating calamities.

Greetings all! 

I hope summer is treating everyone well. 

A few announcements in this email:

1) Guest Teacher for Seydou Coulibaly's Wednesday Dance Class

As most folks already know, Seydou is currently in Mali on his yearly trip leading a group of students (if you would like to go to Mali to study with Seydou, or stay at his school/home, please email wadabo@gmail.com with subject line "Study in Mali"). 

Teaching his class while he is gone is Sharon Kivenko, herself just back from intensive study and research in Mali and Europe. Her classes have been great so far, and with Moussa and Issa heading up the drumming, the music has been awesome as well. 

A little more about Sharon:

Dance Ethnographer, Sharon Kivenko has traveled to Mali and Ghana West Africa, to France and Belgium, and throughout the United States to conduct research on West African dance and music. She recently returned from a year-long stay in Bamako, Mali where she studied dances, rhythms and songs from the Mande canon with members of Seydou Coulibaly's acclaimedTroupe Komée José. She is a member of the historic award-winning Malian dance ensemble Le Ballet du District de Bamako, and has worked with the troupe as a celebration facilitator at community celebrations such as weddings and baptisms. Sharon has also traveled to a variety of rural areas in Mali to observe and participate in community celebrations of all sorts. Sharon is a former member of Joh Camara's Troupe Sewa, and has performed with Seydou Coulibaly, Issa Coulibaly, Djeneba Sacko, Melanie Berg and with Maputo and Mawye Mensah in their Ghanaian dance and music ensemble Logo Legi. A Doctoral Candidate in Social Anthropology at Harvard University, Sharon aims to bring dance as a topic of study and as a physical practice into the academic study of human lifeways and cultures.

4) Dance Complex Summer Cleaning/Temporary ShutDown

The Dance Complex closes yearly for cleaning, renovations, summer vacation. This year, it will be closed from Monday August 23rd through Monday September 7th (reopening on the 8th). If you would like to volunteer during the closure to clean and earn some free classes, please contact the Dance Complex directly.
