[Wadabo_updates] Performers Wanted for International Women's Day

Hello all -
I occasionally get opportunities that come my way that I like to pass on to the community. This is one of them. I have been contacted by the Boston Medical Center who are looking for African Dance/Drum performers for a good cause. If you have a group together already, or can gather up some folks, please email me directly (do NOT reply to this email, I won't get it.) and I'll get you in touch with the right people. My email is erichludwig [at] yahoo.com
This sounds like a fun project, and high visibility as well, likely a press event. They are looking for some dancers, drummers from Sub-Saharan Africa (although the Caribbean/Brazil would also be a good option) to perform, and would like a high percentage of women in the group as it is International Women's Day.
peace.

Hi Erich,

Thanks very much for your speedy reply.  I am the administrator for the Refugee Center here at Boston Medical Center.  We are celebrating International Women's Day on March 7th, Friday, from 10-12 PM.  The event will take place in the Menino lobby, a very central, highly trafficked location at BMC.  Unfortunately our budget is very small so we are looking for a talented group who may be willing to donate their time for a great cause.  This is not a fundraising event, rather an awareness raising event.  I'm very flexible, especially b/c we have little to no budget to work with.

[Wadabo_updates] 7th annual Build a School In Africa Benefit - Dancers Wanted

Dancers wanted! The Build a School In A frica Project is
beginning rehearsals for its 7th Annual "African Rhythms" benefit show.
Show dates are Saturday April 12th at the Cronin Auditorium in the town
of Harvard, Mass, and Sunday, April 13th, at the Julie Ince Thompson
Theatre at the Dance Complex in Central Square.
We are putting together a new dance and choreography for Di-Da-Di, a
dance from the Wassalou Region of Southern Mali, and are looking for a
few dancers to fill out our lineup. There might also be openings for
Madan and Kote, depending on how many of our regular dancers are planning
to perform with us this year. We rehearse mostly on Sunday nights; our
first rehearsal is Sunday, January 27, from 6:30 - 8 P.M. at the Third
Life Studio in Union Square, Somerville. If you are interested, please
contact project director Judy Lorimer at jmlorimer@juno.com or
978-433-2384.
We'd prefer intermediate level or above, and some
familiarity with Seydou Coulibaly or Joh Camara's classes would be very
helpful.
These performances are our biggest fund-raiser. In the last 3 years we
have contributed $10,000 each year toward a joint project with Save the
Children in southern Mali. We have built middle schools in the villages
of Dialakoroba and Massamagana and our third middle school is currently
under construction in Koloni-Filala. If you'd like to be part of this
effort, please consider dancing with us. All the proceeds of the show are
donated to the project. This is a volunteer effort, by the way - we pay
a pittance to the drummers, but no one else gets paid. The project does
pay for the rehearsal time, though we would certainly not turn down a
contribution toward rehearsal and publicity expenses.:-)
Check out our website at www.BuildaSchoolinAfrica.org.

[Wadabo_updates] Stand up & be counted as artists!

Stand Up and Be Counted!

The Artists Foundation Census

Start The Online Questionnaire Now!

Help us make the invisible- VISIBLE!

Greetings! The Artists Foundation has been using the ground breaking 2007 Minnesota study, Artists Count, conducted by Springboard for the Arts & MN Citizens for the Arts, to advocate to the public policy makers in Massachusetts about our population. That study was instrumental for our advocacy in changing a key regulation in the Massachusetts Health Care Reform Law. However, it became clear that we needed to collect our own Massachusetts data.

The Artists Foundation (AF) in collaboration with a wonderful team (including input from Springboard for the Arts) has created an online questionnaire to collect much needed information about our population. We are using a broad and inclusive definition of artists working in all disciplines. It encompasses: visual artists, musicians, composers, writers, poets, playwrights, new media artists, film makers, crafts people, actors, singers, performance artists, graphic designers, lighting designers, dancers, choreographers, and the like.

The STAND UP AND BE COUNTED online questionnaire is divided into three sections: Part One: Census and Key Data; Part Two: Survey; Part Three: Economic Impact. If possible, please answer all three sections. However, if you can only fill out one section, please make every effort to complete ALL the questions in Part One: Census and Key Data.

Thanks again for helping us better advocate for our population!

WE ALL NEED TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! - WWW.ARTISTSFOUNDATION.ORG

"Individual artists, of all disciplines, are often an invisible population to our policy makers and leaders. Current creative economy studies--and, for that matter, studies on the art world--do not adequately, if at all, measure the important contributions artists of all disciplines make, not only to the creative economy, but to our society. Individual artists of all disciplines are the foundation that makes our society and the creative economy thrive and grow. Without the individual artists of all disciplines, there would be no art of any kind to present and experience. There would be no creative economy. It is that simple."

Kathleen Bitetti, Artist & Executive Director of the Artists Foundation

If you would like more information about this online questionnaire,

please contact us at afinfo@artistsfoundation.org or by phone at (617) 464-3559.
