1) New Dance Class :: Ugandan Dances with Moses Buyondo

Moses Buyondo is a master drummer & choreographer from Buganda (central Buganda kingdom).

The joyous intent and vigorous rhythms of Ugandan tribal dances embrace the wisdom of an ancient culture. The dances themselves are all infused with the regional storytelling traditions and oral histories. Each evening, Master drummer Moses Buyondo will focus on a specific dance: sharing its origin, technique, and significance. As the program progresses, students will benefit from the knowledge of various rhythms while learning the story of a remarkable people in time. The course runs from Dec 2, 2010 to Aug 18, 2011. Students are welcome to attend as many or few as they are able. Each session will cover one specific dance. This course is for adults 18 years of age or older. The fee is $10 per class, on a drop in basis.

A 12 piece ensemble from NYC, Zozo Afrobeat features musicians from around the world and is led by African music luminary Kaleta. Born in Benin and raised in Nigeria, Kaleta grew up recording and performing with legendary Nigerian musicians Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. After moving to the US, Kaleta toured with Femi Kuti and Lauryn Hill.

Like Fela, who used his music to challenge a corrupt Nigerian government, Kaleta writes songs that are socially and politically provocative. At the same time, his lyrics reflect a keen sense of humor and message of hope.

Uhuru Afrika's 2 Year Anniversary Party & NextAid World AIDS day Benefit

We can't believe it has been 2 years full of amazing memories, performances, celebrations and MUSIC! We launched our party on December 4th 2008 and 2 full years later we are a movement! Thank you for all of your dedication, support and energy! IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU that we are celebrating this anniversary! We are looking forward to another year full of quality and wonderful gatherings full of surprises and music and dance! As we did for our first party, we honor world AIDS Day. When we began we partnered with NextAid, a non-profit NGO that is doing grassroots AIDS work in Africa. We typically donate 10% of the profits from all of our parties to NextAid, but this month, we donate 100%. We believe in them and the great and needed work they are doing on the African continent!

Uhuru Afrika is part of NextAid's 4th Annual World AIDS Day campaign, kicking off on November 27th and running the entire month of December. There are over a dozen parties in 10 cities in 3 countries on board! Proceeds will support NextAid's current projects in Africa including the construction an eco-friendly micro-enterprise facility for youth in Kenya; the education of orphaned children in South Africa and critical maternal health programs for girls and women in Sierra Leone. 

Did you know...

- Every day 6500 people die of AIDS in Africa 

- In Swaziland, 60% of pregnant women are HIV positive

- There are 15 million orphans in Africa, more than there are American children under the age 5 

- There are 15 million AIDS orphans in Africa

- Parts of Mozambique are facing deforestation due to the demand for coffins.

- 11 Teachers a day die of AIDS in South Africa

- Only 10% of children orphaned by AIDS are receiving any public services.

An on-going study of Contemporary African dance class with: 

Michelle Bach-Coulibaly (see bio below) and Moussa Troare from Mali West Africa.

Class description:

This class will engage each student in a rigorous and detailed physical decoding of Mande Dance and Performance traditions from Mali, West Africa. These  life-cycle, celebratory dances are from the Bambara, Somono, Khassonke, Minianka, Malinke, and Wasalou cultural groups that emphasize Mande concepts of youthfulness, brightness, luminosity, coolness, stability, flexibility, strength, balance and communal healing. Each dance will be taught with a focus upon its cultural context and place in defining a National Patrimony. 

Each class will begin with a thorough warm-up that emphasizes building strength, flexibility, and endurance to efficiently work in the style and vitality of West African Dance, Music and Performance.  The warm-up floor and standing barre is based in Yoga, Pilates, Somatic Studies, and corrective alignment practices.The dances taught are from the Mande region of Mali, with repertory from Contemporary Malian ballet companies including Danse Kelete, Ballet National, District du Bamako, and Troupe Komee Josee.

  

Michelle is the co-founder and director of the Yeredon Centre for Cultural Preservation and Social Engagement in Mali, West Africa. With Seydou Coulibaly, Michelle Bach-Coulibaly directs cultural exchange and service learning trips to Mali every year with three-five week sessions happening over Winter Break, during planting season in the Spring and two different sessions in the Summer.  The Yeredon Centre is in partnership with The Djoumanzana Orphanage and Community center, The Kafo Association, Madame Togo Orphanage, and numerous NGO's to work on literacy, environmental and public health projects.

Moussa Traore was born and raised in Mali, West Africa. He has been playing the djembe for the past thirty years, and in 1984, after completing a twelve-year apprenticeship, he was deemed a "master" by his teachers, Sega Cisse and Sidiki Bagayogo.  Moussa's teachers are still drumming as Malian elders and are highly respected for their life-long work. In this 3 hour workshop, Issa will keep you on your toes with exciting Malian djembe rhythms in his fun and easy-going style. Issa is able to pull the best out of your drumming and he does it with style, grace and a great sense of humor.

This one day workshop will fill up fast. Appropriate for Advanced, Professional as well as beginners!

[Wadabo_updates] 8th Annual Benefit African Dance Class with Sadio Rosche. Proceeds to supoort her two Ussoforal Schools in Senegal and Guinea Bissau

Sadio Rosche is back and it is time again to support the great work she does with children n Senegal and Guinea Bissau.

 

For the 8th time Sadio will be teaching as well as sharing information about her schools and the 300 students they serve in Cambridge. She will also have pictures of the students who still need sponsors.  Each year we raise money that goes to help pay the expenses for new construction or maintenance of it, school and medical supplies, drums and costumes, food and the shipping costs of donated second hand clothes.  Your generosity has helped keep her going.

 

This year thee will also be second Benefit African dance class with Sadio for those, who live in the Concord area and would like to take class and/or contribute to the cause.  

 

Please come even if you do not intend to take the dance class.   Come watch or just drop in to find out about the schools and how you can help.  There is never a donation too small.

Ussoforal (which means "to join together") is an alternative arts school and dance group that was founded on March 30, 2000, in the Plack II neighborhood of Bissau, Guinea Bissau, and in Ziginchor, Senegal, West Africa. It was established as an alternative to delinquency and idleness for out-of-school children, offering the arts such as traditional dance and theatre instead. The two sites now serve almost 300 children.

 

In 2002, the money raised from this Cambridge benefit class helped build most of the school's roof.  In 2004, money was raised to help obtain instruments and costumes and to help organize an event to celebrate their 5^th anniversary in April, 2005.  Each year, we have helped Sadio continue her great work.  Right now, Ussoforal continues to need help in securing school and sports equipment, basic medicines,  food, money to ship second hand clothing, and building maintenance.        

 

CLASS DONATION:  $15  in Cambridge and $16 in Concord   All proceeds will go to The Ussoforul School

Moussa Traore was born and raised in Mali, West Africa. He has been playing the djembe for the past thirty years, and in 1984, after completing a twelve-year apprenticeship, he was deemed a "master" by his teachers, Sega Cisse and Sidiki Bagayogo.  Moussa's teachers are still drumming as Malian elders and are highly respected for their life-long work. Fatou-Carol is back and will begin teaching class again tonight.

 

Sadio Diatta Rosche is also back in town and the annual fundraiser for Sadio's School, Ussoforal , in Guinea Bissau, will be next Friday night, Oct 29.

 

Sadio will be teaching and also sharing information about her school and the children who still need sponsors.   Each year we raise money for new or maintenance construction as well as costumes, school supplies, food and shipping costs for donated clothes.

 

Please come and offer what you can.   All class proceeds will go to help Sadio continue her work with the children in Guinea Bissau and in the Casamance region of Senegal.

This trio brings roots folk azmari music from Ethiopia, sung by Selamnesh Zemene of Fendika, backed by the kebero drumming of Asrat Ayalew and the violin work of Kaethe Hostetter. 

***Debo Band with Fendika guests***

Debo Band kicks out classic Ethiopian grooves of swinging Addis, big horn orchestra style. Wild saxophones and violins over double drums, sousaphone bass, accordion, guitar, and trombone bring the funk jam and new sound on Ethiopian scales and rhythms. Vocalist Bruck Tesfaye of Boston is joined by visiting Ethiopian vocalist Selamnesh Zemene, while Asrat Ayalew doubles Debo's kit drummer with his goatskin kebero drums, backing dancers in a 15-person stage experience. 

Fendika Dancers: Melaku Belay and Zinash Tsegay – traditional, modern, explosive. Called "the sleeper sensation of the Chicago World Music festival," a star of Milwaukee's Global Union, and now returning from New York and East Coast engagements, this tour finale show will be send-off celebration of these Ethiopian guests' time in America in collaboration with Boston-based Debo Band and the dance community. Expect an audience on its feet with children up front and invited onto the dance stage. Not to be missed!

Buffet Eritrean-Ethiopian food from Meheret's Kitchen is available for $10 donation per person. Injera and wots of various spices and flavors!

DANCE CLASS ::: 5:00 - 6:00 pm

This Master Class, taught by Melaku Belay and Zinash Tsegay of Fendika, welcomes both trained dancers and anyone interested in traditional Ethiopian dance forms. Melaku is a master of a range of traditional Ethiopian dance forms, from eskista to Gurage and Tigrigna, and he has toured in Europe, North America, and Africa while maintaining an Addis Ababa hotspot of acoustic traditional Ethiopian folk music and dance, where Zinash is the lead female dancer. This demonstration and workshop will give you new skills to try out and insight into the dance stageshow that Melaku and Zinash will perform with Debo Band's concert! Get those shoulders loose ...  Fatou-Carol Sylla holds an M.S.P.H. in Health Education, M.A. in Dance from Lesley University and Massachusetts Teaching Certification K-12 in both Dance and Health.  She has been a dance teacher, performer and choreographer for the past 35 years. She currently teaches at the Dance Complex and VSA arts of Massachusetts, leads a summer studies abroad program, Dance, Music and Culture in Senegal, West Africa, that is accredited through Lesley University, and leads Moving Into Authenticity, movement and healing workshops, in the Boston area. She is also a Baby Boomer.
