This summer, join ThisWorldMusic (http://www.thisworldmusic.com) and
UMass Amherst us as we journey to the Dagbe Cultural Center in the

centuries are kept alive in their original form:

drumming, dancing, singing and visual arts. Dagbe's rigorous
instruction and authentic natural surroundings make for an experience
unlike any other.

[Wadabo_updates] Djoniba's Centre of NYC to close...

Sunday, December 21, 2008

Djoniba Centre to close

[Note: I have just received the following announcement from the
Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre. These are very tough times for most dance
professionals and institutions. If you can manage to help in any way,
please visit the Centre's site for more information.]

Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, the legendary New York City multi-ethnic
dance school and not-for-profit organization, is closing its doors on
December 31st, after 15 years of "exceptional contributions to our
city" (New York City Council proclamation). Hit by the economic
crisis--with fewer students attending classes -- and a major rent
increase, DDDC has no other option but to sadly shut down.

The immediate result would be 55 teachers and drummers losing their
jobs. Hundreds of children from lower income families losing the
opportunity to receive free dance scholarships, along with thousands
of adult students losing their community workout, a place to release
stress and convene "Since its establishment, Djoniba Dance & Drum
Centre-one of New York City's largest minority-owned cultural
centers--has dedicated itself to connecting men and women of all ages
and ethnicities through the arts.

In a letter of June 2007, Mayor Bloomberg wrote, "As we look back on
the incredible accomplishments of DDDC's 15 years, we also look
forward to even greater achievements on the horizon."

"I am confident that the New York community and government officials,
who understand the profound impact that our philosophy and ethnic
dance taught in our institution has on so many lives, will rally up
and help us continue our mission of providing health, fitness, and
harmony amongst New Yorkers" says the founder Djoniba Mouflet.

How you can help

DDDC needs funds for a new home and is urgently seeking aid. You can
make donations online or by mail. Contributions will allow for
construction, fundraising, architectural design, web design, building
materials, office furniture and equipment. Who knows how long this
economic climate will last--but what kind of city will be left when
it's over, if we allow our community owned cultural institutions to
close?

About Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre

Since its inception in 1992, as a not-for-profit cultural and
charitable organization, the Djoniba Dance and Drum Centre has strived
to celebrate our global diversity through world dance and music and is
dedicated to bridging the gap between all ages, ethnic groups, and
cultures through dance and music. The Centre is one of New York City's
largest minority-owned dance studio, and the only cultural center in
the world specializing in multi-ethnic dance and drum. The Centre
serves thousands of adults and children annually, has a roster of 35
master teachers dancers and drummers, who teach more than 100 dance
classes per week in more than 30 different styles of movement and
music from around the world.

Founded and directed by Djoniba Mouflet, the internationally-acclaimed
drummer, dancer, teacher, performer and choreographer, the Centre
houses three dance studios, a children's program and an adult evening
program. DDDC has become a popular cultural and fitness spot, attended
by celebrities like Tyra Banks, Julia Roberts, Brook Shields and
featured in several magazines, newspapers and major TV shows.

Awarded "Best New York Dance School" several years in a row by The
Village Voice, New York Magazine, New York Press and AM New York, DDDC
has also been recognized by city officials-including Mayor Bloomberg,
The New York City Council, Manhattan Borough president Scott M.
Stringer, as well as New York State Assembly N. Godfrey for its
outstanding service to the New York community.

"I applaud Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre for your strong commitment to
the culture and community." (Richard N. Godfrey, New York State
Assembly)

"It is the tradition and custom of the New York City Council to honor
its most distinguished citizens, and today we are pleased to recognize
Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, Inc for its exceptional contributions to
our City. Today, we honor Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, Inc., an
organization that has distinguished itself in service to the
community: is has enriched us with its presence and achievements and
is worthy of the esteem of all New Yorkers." (Proclamation by The
Council of the City of New York)

[Wadabo_updates] Samba & Capoeira w/ Deraldo CANCELED 12/17

The DC

[Wadabo_updates] Please help Daniel Soumah

Dear African Dance & Drum community,
In this time of giving and family, please take a minute to reach out and help someone who is in dire need in our own African dance and music family, Daniel Soumah:

The African drum and dance community are reaching out at this time to ask for financial donations to help Susan & Daniel Soumah with the very trying time they are experiencing.

It is a terrible misfortune that Daniel is very sick with cancer.  Daniel got a chance to come to America to marry Susan and better his life, and now he is ill.  Dana Farber has done all they can do for him.  The cancer is no longer responding to his chemo treatments.  The cancer has spread to several areas of his body and is very progressive.  They are preparing them for only months, not years, for Daniel to live.

Daniel would very much like to fly home to see his family for a short visit and then return to be with Susan.  Due to many health risk factors, it is uncertain if the trip would be too much for him.

Another option they are contemplating, is to have one or two of his family members be able to fly here from Guinea to be with Daniel in the near future.

In either case, assistance would be very much appreciated by Susan & Daniel in their time of need.  Your prayers are as well.

If you wish to help with a donation gift, please contact Fatou F'Diaye at:  fndiaye79@yahoo.com, or phone her at either of these numbers:

Thank you and blessings during the holidays.

The Music:

Africa is arguably the center of the world and the birthplace of man. With this comes the birthplace of music. Africa is home to many styles of music, and has given birth, through the African diaspora or, slave trade to many more. Our DJs skillfully select music from this grand stream of music that Includes AfroBeat, AfroSoul and Funk, AfroHouse, Reggae, Dub, Salsa, Bossa Nova, SoulJazz, Kwaito, Yoruba, AfroCuban Jazz and many more. This collection of music, programmed together in one evening, under one roof, isn't readily available, or known to even exist to the general population of this city. We hope that through word of mouth and with the help of the media, we can bring it to them.

Crowd Participation:

In order to accentuate the rhythm in the music, We will be providing various instruments for the crowd to pick up and join in on the musical creative process. Community instruments such as tambourines, shekeres and hand-drums will be on site.

The Venue: All Asia Bar:

Big clubs are a focal point for the masses, but often at the sacrifice of homogenizing the personal connection with people. Instead, we are going for a small, intimate and hospitable venue. Instead of attempting to acquire 600+ participants during a night, we are perfectly happy with 100-150 people that are serious and light-hearted about creating a positive, uplifting landscape that will facilitate an environment not easily found in the city. A place where people come together to connect with each other under the umbrella of a conscious and positive musical experience instead of the mainstream superficial interaction. We sought out that perfect intimate venue where if the lighting and decoration is right, coupled with the music and incense in the air… you could blink your eyes and be tricked that you were in a local hangout in Dakar, Nairobi or Lagos.

Medford — On Saturday, December 6th, 2008, the Springstep Performance Series is proud to present African Winter: Balla Tounkara and Groupe Spirit.  Hailing from Mali, West Africa, Balla Tounkara is a master kora player and one of the most popular artists on the World Music scene.  He and his band Groupe Spirit perform an exciting, spicy blend of danceable music fusing African, Latin, Funk, Reggae, Jazz, and Blues musical stylings.

Tounkara's ancestors were African bards known as "griots" who passed on the history, traditions, songs, and stories of the Mendeng people in the oral tradition.  Known himself as "The Griot of Boston," Tounkara learned to play the kora (the original 21 string harp of Africa) as a child and honed his skills through years of strict discipline and commitment.  Under the tutelage of his internationally acclaimed grandfathers, Batrou Sekou Kouyate and Samakou Tounkara, he learned to respect the significance of this royal music, becoming a master kora player and vocalist in his own right.

In keeping with the new format of Springstep's Performance Series, this eclectic show will be followed by interactive time with the artists, and a chance for audience members to learn a little African dance and music themselves!

Never seen or heard an African kora?
