Hello all -
I hope you've been enjoying the live music from africa and the diaspora
at the middle east corner over the past couple months. this week we'll
be taking a one-week break, and then the schedule will resume.
however, this thursday, you can also check out Vieux Farka Toure (son of
the late great Ali Farka Toure from Mali) who is appearing at Johnny D's
in Somerville. The show is at 9 pm and door is $15.

The Middle East Schedule for March and April is taking shape, so come on

ALL LEVELS OF DRUMMERS – Beyond Beginner to Professionals and Teachers

Please take this opportunity to consider a trip to Africa WITHOUT the airplane fare!

This 5 Day Workshop is a total immersion with one of the greatest djembe players/historians/teachers in the world today. ALL djembe players owe much of their information and playing skills to Famoudou Konate.

Come join us to experience how great these workshops are. You will learn it ALL and come away a vastly improved player. You will learn all the djembe lines, traditional solos, full arrangements that Famoudou has made famous AND all of the dunun (bass drum and bell) patterns that make the COMPLETE RHYTHM. Famoudou will also teach you the songs and the meaning of the words as well as the melodies and variations. You will come away with enough material to keep you busy for a long, long time. And Famoudou's spirit is infectious. Healings take place! We'll dance and sing and have many moments of sheer JOY!

Five days with Famoudou Konate is like a trip to Guinea and is a rare and unique experience. This series will sell out. We have strict limits on registrations so no special exceptions can me made. Register early to avoid disappointment. We turned away over 40 people last year and the year before that to give quality instruction as Famoudou Konate wishes.

[Wadabo_updates] Dance audition notice

African Dance & Music Community
Dance Audition Notice:

Female dancers wanted
(African American, West Indian, Haitian, Latina, Dominican, Cape Verdian, etc.)
18+ , needed for March 24th 2007 stage performance. Dancers
will be involved in a 8-10 minute piece that will depict the different personalities, ethnicities
and social econimic status of women of color in Boston.
Any level is welcome and different styles will be encouraged.

[Wadabo_updates] Providence Sunday Class Location Change

Dear African Dance Community,

Due to insurance issues around use of space at Brown University,
starting this Sunday, Issa's and Seyodu's classes will no longer be held
in Ashamu on Sundays in Providence.

While on some levels this is a loss for our community, we are looking
forward to sharing our collective energy with a new space. Sometimes
changes like these have a way of opening us up to new and otherwise
unforeseen opportunities.

Classes will NOW be held at their regularly scheduled times at:

Hillel at Brown
Hillel is located on the NW corner of Angell and Brown Streets -- very
near to Ashamu. Mapquest/google maps should be able to help you if that
sounds unfamiliar.

The only change we are going to face involves folks who bring families
to class -- we need to contain our scene to the social hall, which means
that little ones cannot play throughout the building (in the social hall
is of course fine).

senegal, so there will be no sabar dance class tomorrow (thursday,
feb.15). he apologizes for the inconvenience.

[Wadabo_updates] "Amazones" workshop in NH

Hi EVERYONE!!
Timbre Drums is bringing the "AMAZONES", an internationally acclaimed, all-women drum ensemble from
Guinea, West Africa, to Concord NH to give a two-hour drum workshop, on March 4th, 2007. This is the Amazones' first time in the US, and very first time in New Hampshire, so it is a unique opportunity have them come there to teach us, and we are very excited about it!

The workshop will be held on Sunday, March 4th, 2007, from 2-4 pm, at the
Broken Ground School in Concord, New Hampshire. The workshop price is $40.

Danny Glover will be present at the opening night of the 8^th Annual Boston African Film Festival (February 16-25) for a screening of his film Bamako on February 16^th at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Danny Glover produces and appears in Abderrahmane Sissako's powerful indictment of globalism, and will be participating in a panel discussion with local experts following the film. We also feature two films and a program of shorts from the African Film Festival NY Traveling Series: the tender A Child's Love Story and Dumisani Phakathi's South African family documentary Don't F*** with Me I Have 51 Brothers and Sisters . Other highlights include U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, a South African version of Bizet's Carmen.

[Wadabo_updates] Show & workshop w/ Amazones, women percussionists from Guinea

Please see the information below to take advantage of the visit to Brandeis University
by the Amazones ,
a women's drumming ensemble
from Guinea, West Africa
March 1-3, 2007.

The ensemble will engage with the public through many activities,
including a DRUMMING WORKSHOP that is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC,
from 5:30 to 7:00pm on March 2.

Their stay concludes with a concert at Brandeis at 8pm on Saturday, March 3.

Amazones, Women Master Drummers From Guinea, come to Brandeis University for the only New England stop on their US tour on March 3 at 8 pm. The West African group's dancing and drumming has been called "a heavenly outpouring of throbbing jubilation, forceful uplifting beats and pounding enthusiasm" by Maximum Ink Music Magazine. Tickets are $20 general, $10 students and seniors, with discounts for groups and children. A lecture by Lansine Kaba, Brandeis professor of African American studies, precedes the concert at 7 pm. happy to continue African dance in the weekly Sunday Slot.

Description: Students will learn a variety of West African Dances from Mali, Guinea and Ivory Coast regions. Students will learn the cultural and historical context for each dance. The class begins with a ½ hour warm-up, and progresses to energetic dancing to live drumming (djembe and djun-djun). Come experience one of the most skilled and enthusiastic master dancers/teachers and one of the premier West African classes in terms of energy. During class Joh tailors his teaching to accommodate all levels of dancers. Class is accompanied by live percussion by African drum masters. Clothing should be loose. Women may wear a lapa or sarong (cloth wrapped around the hips) but it is not required, bare feet.

[Wadabo_updates] Sabar Dance with Paa Seck THIS Thursday & more...

Dear Sabar Enthusiasts,

As some of you may be aware, Paa and Moha Seck (Lamine's cousins) have been coming from NYC to substitute for some of Lamine's sabar dance classes at the Dance Complex on Thursdays. If you haven't gone yet, be sure to come to class THIS Thursday, February 15th (Dance Complex 6:30-8) - THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE BEFORE LAMINE RETURNS...you won't regret it!!

For those of you who are drummers, Paa and Moha will be around for a few days so if enough people are interested, they will teach a sabar drum class this SATURDAY (Feb 10) from 10:30am-12:00noon at the MIT world music room (please note the earlier time, as it is the only time that works with their schedule). Please email me ASAP if you plan to come to this class so that they can decide whether or not to have it!

Finally, Lamine will be back next week, inch Allah, so his weekly class schedule will resume. The FIRST CLASSES will take place as follows:

THURSDAY, Feb. 15 - 6:30-8 sabar dance at Dance Complex

SATURDAY, Feb. 17 - 12-1:30 - sabar drum class at MIT world music room

MONDAY, Feb. 19 - 6-7:30 - sabar drum class at MIT world music room

and the next GROUP SALOUM show will be THURSDAY, FEB. 22 at the Lizard Lounge, so mark the date on your calendars!
