Focusing on the Dances of The Casamance Region of Senegal, West Africa

A BENEFIT CLASS (with all profits going to her School in Guinea Bissau)

Classes will be held at the DANCE COMPLEX, 536 Mass Ave. Central Sq, Cambridge, $12

Sadio is raising funds for a group of financially challenged youth, who have difficulty entering the public school system in Guinea Bissau, West Africa. She created and continues to direct Goupo Jose Carlos Swharz Shcool of the Arts, which is now five years old and has over 200 students. This is an excellent way to support the betterment of our world's children. Come to class, make a donation or adopt a student.

This is a reminder that Abdoulaye Sylla will be teaching a series of Sister Fatou N'Diaye's classes while she is still recovering. Come and enjoy the dances of Guinea, West Africa, a somewhat rare opportunity in Boston.

Also, we are fortunate to have Kissema Dioubate visiting the N'Diaye family in the next week all the way from Germany!! Originally from Dakar, Senegal, Kissema is a former member of the Senegalese national dance company, Ballet La Linguire. Kissema has taught in Boston on many occasions to rave reviews. Don't miss out!

Abdoulaye Sylla was a principal dancer and percussionist with Les Ballets Africains, the national dance troupe of the Republic of Guinea, from 1989 to 1994 and a principal dancer, percussionist, and the director of technique for Les Merveilles D'Afrique, a private folkloric troupe which trains dancers for the national company, from 1986 through 1994. He has performed, toured, and taught traditional dance throughout Africa, Europe, and the United States. His US-based troupe, Fotoba, appeared recently at the benefit concert for Sister Fatou in August with a performance that received rave reviews. Fatou extends her thanks to Abdoulaye for his continued energy and support!

Elhadji Gueye comes from Senegal, West Africa and has been drumming and dancing professionally since his childhood. He is a member of the famous family of griots called Sing Sing Rhythms. Griots are the musicians, dancers, singers, storytellers and oral historians of West Africa. They are world renowned for their expertise in drumming, drum making and keeping ancient West African traditions alive. Elhadji, who comes from a long line of artists, danced for many years with Youssou N'Dour (Senegal's most famous singer). He has also performed with Baba Maal, Ismaila Loure and many other international artists. Elhadji has taught intensive dance workshops in Dakar, New York, Richmond, San Francisco and Amsterdam. He was also part of the Sunugal Ballet, one of Senegal's national dance and drum corps. Currently, Elhadji teaches Sabar dance at Djoniba Dance and Drum Center in New York City.

Fatou N'Diaye - our elder, our long-time teacher, our friend - needs our help! Fatou injured her shoulder while at home in Senegal. She has undergone surgery and taken time off from her day job and from her dance teaching. Fatou has been a key figure in the West African dance community in Boston, and has been instrumental in keeping it going and supporting new teachers and students in their journeys.

Please come out to enjoy a wonderful evening of dance, drum and song, and help Fatou get back on her feet!
