First, a giant THANK YOU to Robert, who has been hosting wadabo.com

willingness to do this for free has been a great help, especially as
we have zero budget. We're moving forward hoping to use some free
tools on the web to keep us rolling.

We're moving our email list over to MailChimp. This means a few things:
* you'll need to reconfirm your subscription to WADaBo - so please be
on the lookout for an email from MailChimp - if you don't do
reconfirm, you may risk not getting future emails from us.
* a maximum of 4 emails a month from WADaBo will be sent to you
* emails will come out on Tuesdays only, so if you have submissions,
please get them in to me in advance - we can't send out one off emails
any more :(

WEBSITE CHANGES
A preview of our new website is available here:

The main website (http://wadabo.com) will move over here shortly.
The new site is still a bit of a work in progress, if you have

[Wadabo_updates] MIT Griot Festival

MIT Stages 2nd Biennial Griot Festival:

Celebrating the music, drumming and dance of Africa's culture bearers

February 25 - 27, 2011

___________________________________

Rambax, the Senegalese drumming ensemble at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hosts a weekend of events celebrating the musical traditions of griots from Africa and the Diaspora on the weekend of February 25-27.  The Festival, held in conjunction with Black History Month, is curated by MIT artist-in-residence Lamine TourĂ© and Prof. Patricia Tang.

Masters of words and music, griots are the hereditary musicians and keepers of oral history who have played an important role in many African cultures for centuries. For this event, Rambax will be joined by the Mbaye Family Drum Troupe, one of Senegal's most renowned families of griot drummers. Specialists in the sabar tradition, the Mbaye Family Drum Troupe is descended from 14th-century griots who accompanied the kings to the front lines of battle, drumming and singing their praises. The Mbaye Family Drum Troupe currently performs in Senegal at weddings, baptisms, sabar dances, political meetings and wrestling matches.

The Troupe is featured in a book by MIT ethnomusicologist Patricia Tang entitled Masters of the Sabar: Wolof Griot Percussionists of Senegal.

"We are delighted to bring back members of the Mbaye Family Drum Troupe again this spring to share their rich musical traditions with MIT and the greater Boston area," says Professor Tang.  "This year we are especially excited to have Aziz Seck among the Troupe members, as Seck is a veteran of mbalax, the genre of popular music that has dominated Senegalese airwaves since the early 1970s.  Seck is a pioneer, being the first percussionist to introduce sabar into mbalax music.  We look forward to Seck sharing his music and experiences with us."

The festival will include drum and dance workshops led by members of the Mbaye Family Drum Troupe (Aziz Seck, Alassane Djigo, Vieux TourĂ© and Mass Mbaye) as well as other African artists currently residing in the US.  There will also be a panel discussion with Aziz Seck which will give the public an opportunity to learn about the history and current role of griots throughout West Africa, with a focus on their role in the Senegalese popular music scene.

The festival will culminate in a gala performance of African music, drum and dance featuring the Mbaye Family Drum Troupe, Rambax MIT, and other guest artists including Pape BĂą, Sidi Mohamed "Joh" Camara, Ibrahima "Thiokho" Diagne, Rich Faye, Balla Kouyate,  Babacar Ndiaye, Sana Ndiaye, Talla Ngom, Cheikh Ngom, Yeumougor "Paa" Seck, Babacar "Moha" Seck, Demba SĂšne, Fatoumata Sylla, and Lila Sylla.

All events are open to the public unless otherwise noted. Made possible by MIT's Music and Theater Arts Section, the Council for the Arts, and the School for Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Dean's Office.

'Zozo' - taken from the Goun and Fon word for 'something hot', truly keeps the Afrobeat fires burning. A 12 piece ensemble from NYC, Zozo Afrobeat features musicians from around the world and is led by African music luminary Kaleta. Born in Benin and raised in Nigeria, Kaleta grew up recording and performing with legendary Nigerian musicians Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. After moving to the US, Kaleta toured with Femi Kuti and Lauryn Hill.

Like Fela, who used his music to challenge a corrupt Nigerian government, Kaleta writes songs that are socially and politically provocative. At the same time, his lyrics reflect a keen sense of humor and message of hope.

Come to dance to Zozo's remarkable energy - singing, dancing, cascades of horns, hypnotic Benino-Nigerian rhythms, captivating solos.

Uhuru Afrika's 2 Year Anniversary Party & NextAid World AIDS day Benefit

Saturday, December 11 at 9:00pm - December 12 at 12:00am
AllAsia Bar
344 Mass Avenue in Central Square
Cambridge, MA

We can't believe it has been 2 years full of amazing memories, performances, celebrations and MUSIC! We launched our party on December 4th 2008 and 2 full years later we are a movement! Thank you for all of your dedication, support and energy! IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU that we are celebrating this anniversary! We are looking forward to another year full of quality and wonderful gatherings full of surprises and music and dance! As we did for our first party, we honor world AIDS Day. When we began we partnered with NextAid, a non-profit NGO that is doing grassroots AIDS work in Africa. We typically donate 10% of the profits from all of our parties to NextAid, but this month, we donate 100%. We believe in them and the great and needed work they are doing on the African continent!

Uhuru Afrika is part of NextAid's 4th Annual World AIDS Day campaign, kicking off on November 27th and running the entire month of December. There are over a dozen parties in 10 cities in 3 countries on board! Proceeds will support NextAid's current projects in Africa including the construction an eco-friendly micro-enterprise facility for youth in Kenya; the education of orphaned children in South Africa and critical maternal health programs for girls and women in Sierra Leone.

Did you know...

- Every day 6500 people die of AIDS in Africa
- In Swaziland, 60% of pregnant women are HIV positive
- There are 15 million orphans in Africa, more than there are American children under the age 5
- There are 15 million AIDS orphans in Africa
- Parts of Mozambique are facing deforestation due to the demand for coffins.
- 11 Teachers a day die of AIDS in South Africa
- Only 10% of children orphaned by AIDS are receiving any public services.

If you cannot make it to a benefit party, you can still be a part of the global campaign by joining us online. For all the up-to-date campaign information, go to

NextAid is a dance music based nonprofit organization that harnesses the power of music to support sustainable development projects that serve vulnerable children, youth and women in Africa. KALETA & ZOZO AFROBEAT!

18+ : $10 : 9pm-1am ($5 before 10 pm)

We're taking JUMP! to the roots of our party - to Afrobeat. To the music that inspires our souls and moves our feet, that moves our souls and inspires our feet.
