Griot singer, guitarist, songwriter and storyteller
Boubacar Diabate from Bamako, Mali
comes from the Mandinka lineage and has combined traditional rhythms with modern influences to create his own style of contemporary Malian Griot music, singing and playing guitar with his group, Samba Lolo. Singing in Bambara, they create a performance that spans the full spectrum of Traditional to Contemporary Malian music from West Africa. Bouba sings of a common shared experience of love, life and humanity, giving all an opportunity to hear the age-old West African tradition of Griot storytelling through song. Thank you for your interest in supporting the Build a school in Mali
Benefit shows. This is an invitation to participate
and  join a group of committed dancers for a repertory class that
will lead to a performance of the dance/rhythm Danse  this spring.

Come
learn from a master teacher/choreographer, Fatou Carol Sylla and
perform in 2 shows : May 5 and 6th 2007. We will focus on
performance skills, group cohesion and drummer/dancer relationship.

[Wadabo_updates] Show & workshop w/ Amazones, women percussionists from Guinea

Please see the information below to take advantage of the visit to Brandeis University
by the Amazones ,
a women's drumming ensemble
from Guinea, West Africa
March 1-3, 2007.

The ensemble will engage with the public through many activities,
including a DRUMMING WORKSHOP that is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC,
from 5:30 to 7:00pm on March 2.

Their stay concludes with a concert at Brandeis at 8pm on Saturday, March 3.

Amazones, Women Master Drummers From Guinea, come to Brandeis University for the only New England stop on their US tour on March 3 at 8 pm. The West African group's dancing and drumming has been called "a heavenly outpouring of throbbing jubilation, forceful uplifting beats and pounding enthusiasm" by Maximum Ink Music Magazine. Tickets are $20 general, $10 students and seniors, with discounts for groups and children. A lecture by Lansine Kaba, Brandeis professor of African American studies, precedes the concert at 7 pm. African Dance Classes at The Dance Complex
Sundays 3:00-4:30pm

The DC is excited to have Joh at the Complex and
happy to continue African dance in the weekly Sunday Slot.
This past Sunday was a great start - please spread the word so the
class can continue to grow!

$12/class, $6 for children up to 16 years of age.

Description: Students will learn a variety of West African Dances from Mali, Guinea and Ivory Coast regions. Students will learn the cultural and historical context for each dance. The class begins with a ½ hour warm-up, and progresses to energetic dancing to live drumming (djembe and djun-djun). Come experience one of the most skilled and enthusiastic master dancers/teachers and one of the premier West African classes in terms of energy. During class Joh tailors his teaching to accommodate all levels of dancers. Class is accompanied by live percussion by African drum masters. Clothing should be loose. Women may wear a lapa or sarong (cloth wrapped around the hips) but it is not required, bare feet.

[Wadabo_updates] Sabar Dance with Paa Seck THIS Thursday & more...

Dear Sabar Enthusiasts,

As some of you may be aware, Paa and Moha Seck (Lamine's cousins) have been coming from NYC to substitute for some of Lamine's sabar dance classes at the Dance Complex on Thursdays. If you haven't gone yet, be sure to come to class THIS Thursday, February 15th (Dance Complex 6:30-8) - THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE BEFORE LAMINE RETURNS...you won't regret it!!

For those of you who are drummers, Paa and Moha will be around for a few days so if enough people are interested, they will teach a sabar drum class this SATURDAY (Feb 10) from 10:30am-12:00noon at the MIT world music room (please note the earlier time, as it is the only time that works with their schedule). Please email me ASAP if you plan to come to this class so that they can decide whether or not to have it!

Finally, Lamine will be back next week, inch Allah, so his weekly class schedule will resume. The FIRST CLASSES will take place as follows:

THURSDAY, Feb. 15 - 6:30-8 sabar dance at Dance Complex

SATURDAY, Feb. 17 - 12-1:30 - sabar drum class at MIT world music room

MONDAY, Feb. 19 - 6-7:30 - sabar drum class at MIT world music room

and the next GROUP SALOUM show will be THURSDAY, FEB. 22 at the Lizard Lounge, so mark the date on your calendars!

Dear Friends,
We are happy to announce that the Brazilian Cultural Center of New
England has been granted the necessary approval from the City of
Cambridge Zoning Board to go forth (continue) with the construction
project started last winter. Deraldo had a lawyer with him who made a
very strong argument for the Center. Even more impressive was the
support from students, fans and members of the community. When the
Board asked who in the room was in favor of the project about 3/4 of
those present threw their hands in the air.

Center when it is open!

Hello all -
Please find below a VERY important announcement. As you know, one of our prime locations for African Dance has been out of action for over a year. The Brasilian Cultural Center was demolished so that Deraldo could rebuild it with condos on top in order to actually keep the place open for decades to come.
However, the city of Cambridge has changed its mind about the building permit in MID-CONSTRUCTION!!!
Please come out and tell them to grant Deraldo the building permit so we can get back to dancing at the BCC!

Hi Everyone,

This is a reminder about Thursday's Hearing regarding the Brazilian Cultural Center construction project.
The reason it is SO important to be there in person is that on Thursday the Zoning Board will make a DECISION about the fate of the BCCNE project and ultimately about it's existence.
We want to show the Board that the Center is important to many people! If you show up, this message will be crystal clear.

[Wadabo_updates] Class Cancellation: Fatou Keita Monday Class (Jan 22)

Hello everyone -

First of all, a big THANK YOU to all who showed up to Fatou's class last night! And thank you for your generosity.

If you were there, you know that there was an electrical problem at Be One, which we don't anticipate will be solved by tomorrow.

So sadly, we'll have to cancel Fatou's class tomorrow (Monday) due to this problem, but we hope to bring her back to Boston for some guest workshops later this winter and spring.

Also, Joh will be back at class on Saturday, January 27th. He will be likely drumming that class as he would like to offer Fatou one additional class before he resumes his normal teaching schedule.
